Life At The Preserve
This past February, I was blessed to witness a breathtaking natural spectacle—the migration of ring-necked ducks returning to the heart of central Florida.
I was standing along the quiet wetlands of the Sharon Rose Wiechens Preserve when an incredible sound echoed from the heavens. It was like a tremendous, roaring gust of vibrating wind. Looking up, my heart pounded with joyful surprise as a massive, sweeping flock of ducks fractured the sky, arriving at the preserve in successive waves of hundreds at a time.
By the time the sky cleared, thousands of birds blanketed the water. I was incredibly fortunate to be there on the very first night of their arrival.
For the next seven to ten days, I chased this magic, returning daily to follow them. Each encounter was an equally exhilarating rush that words can barely hold. I never tired of that palpable, vibrational hum or the visually stunning chaos of these beautiful diving ducks.
The males are striking, boasting tall, peaked crowns, glossy black heads, and sleek grey flanks accented by a piercing white spot. The females carry a quiet elegance in their soft greyish-brown plumage and delicate white eye rings.
As I composed my shots, I looked past the birds to the beautiful houses framing the water. I often wonder what it must be like to actually live on the edge of the Sharon Rose Wiechens Preserve, waking up daily to this wild, symphonic rhythm. Instead of cropping those homes out, I deliberately kept them in the frame. They add a beautiful, human dimension to the story—a tribute to "Life at the Preserve" and the lucky few who share their backyards with the wild.
This print captures that exact harmony between our world and theirs, filling your space with the thrilling, echoing energy of a seasonal awakening.
