The Mugshot

"Captured just thirteen days before his passing at the age of 65, this fine art wildlife portrait stands as a final tribute to Lu—the legendary heart of Homosassa Springs.

This image honors the quiet majesty and enduring spirit of a beloved friend who captured the hearts of generations."

"I have the distinct honor of sharing the story of Lu, a truly legendary spirit wrapped in the gentle presence of a hippopotamus.". Born in San Diego back in 1960, Lu carried 65 years of rich history in his weathered, majestic brow. After two decades in the Hollywood spotlight as a movie and television star, he faced an unexpected eviction from his home, but the hearts of his fans eventually secured his forever sanctuary.

His incredible journey led him to Ellie Schiller Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park in Crystal River, Florida, where his enduring, gentle spirit is forever honored in this wildlife photography print.

When the Florida Park Service took over in 1989, a policy began to relocate all non-native wildlife. However, the local community refused to let their beloved giant go. A massive public petition reached the highest desk in the state, prompting Governor Lawton Chiles to step in. He officially declared Lu an honorary Florida citizen—making him the first and only animal citizen in Florida history, legally securing his forever home.

Though Lu has lived his entire life in sanctuary, his favorite pastime is sharing quiet, gentle moments with his visitors.

On this day,  (March 26, 2025) I spent quite some time sitting with Lu, talking to him and murmuring supportive words as he carefully navigated his way back into the cool water.

As his massive form submerged, I waited with my lens poised, watching the ripples and guessing where his grand silhouette would reemerge.

Suddenly, breaking the glassy surface, he rose directly in front of me.

This portrait captures that breathtaking, face-to-face connection—the ultimate, soulful "mugshot" of Florida's favorite citizen. "Thank you, Lu, for making my day," I whispered as I finally walked away. "It is always a privilege to visit you, year after year." ( Little did a know it would be my last farewell.)
