Lucky Meets Goldie

story and photography by:  Lou Chmura

Two crane chicks in a marsh, one chirping

This sandhill crane photography print captures the fierce and tender legacy beginning on the sun-dappled wetlands of the Sharon Rose Wiechens Preserve in The Villages, Florida.

I was honored to have witnessed the downy warmth of two newborn sandhill crane colts as they navigated their first hours of life.

Lucky, arriving a mere twelve hours before Goldie, initially claimed the marsh as his kingdom, asserting his eldest right with the bold, playful gravity of a sumo wrestler. .

Yet, the universe favors resilience; it took only a breath of time for Goldie to find her footing, rising to meet his challenge with an answering spark of defiance.

Watching this ancient, spirited dance unfold through my lens, my heart swelled with a profound reverence for the raw instinct of survival and the sudden, beautiful shift into harmony. By the following dawn, the battlefield dissolved into a sanctuary of shared joy, their spirits locking not in combat, but in a lifelong bond of companionship.

My photograph captures that fleeting, precious transition—the exact moment where rivalry surrenders to love, echoing the resilient, playful rhythm of the wild.

A captivating piece of bird wildlife wall art, this fine art crane print brings the drama and beauty of Florida’s natural wetlands directly into your space.
