Waking early to visit the wetlands of the Sharon Rose Wiechens Preserve always feels like a quiet act of devotion, but this particular morning rewarded me in ways I never expected.

 

Before dawn, the world around me was entirely swallowed by a heavy, rolling fog—a photographer’s dream that completely blurred the boundaries between earth and sky.

 

As I waited, the mist slowly parted, and a spectacular sunrise broke through the haze, painting the horizon in a sudden burst of celestial light. 

 

Then, as if conjured by the morning magic, a young sandhill crane mother stepped out of the white shroud and into the golden glow, with her two tiny colts close at her side.

 

Standing there in the damp morning air, my soul expanded with a breathless wave of awe at this unscripted gift from nature. The profound serendipity of that moment—where blinding fog gave way to a radiant sunrise, followed by the ethereal appearance of new life—filled my heart with an overwhelming sense of gratitude.
